Act 9: The Generosity of God's House

Acts: Our Church HIStory

Preached by: Phill Howell | 3/30/25

Scripture/Text: Acts 4:32-5:11; This week's sermon continues our two-month study through Acts 3-8 by exploring the powerful contrast between generosity and judgment in Acts 4:32-5:11. We saw that when the Holy Spirit fills a church, it doesn't become controlling like communism or comfortable like consumerism but Christ-like. A surface reading of these passages might reduce them to simple lessons about money or morality, but taken together they reveal something deeper: the resurrection of Jesus has launched a new world, one that empowers radical grace and generosity.

Discussion Questions:

1. In light of Acts 4-5, what does it mean to be “all in” with Christ? How does this challenge our tendency to live with one foot in the old world and one in the new?

2. How does Jesus' resurrection empower both radical generosity and reverent holiness in the early church, and specifically in our church today?

3. What are some ways we can embody Spirit-filled generosity in ordinary, everyday life beyond financial giving?

4. Why is it important that we don't reduce this passage to a rule about money or tithing? How does viewing it through the lens of the resurrection change everything?

5. Ananias and Sapphira looked like they were “all in” from the outside. What warning does their story offer us as we examine our own hearts?

6. Why do you think God judged Ananias and Sapphira so severely? How can we talk about God's judgment and holiness without minimizing His grace?

7. Barnabas was not only generous, but he was ready to be sent. How might loosening our grip on comfort or possessions free us up for gospel mission?

8. How can our church grow in both boldness and purity, without becoming harsh or legalistic?

9. What does true unity look like in the church and how is it connected to holiness and generosity?

10. How does prayer help us live faithfully between the resurrection (D-Day) and Christ's return (V-E Day)?
