A Song About Sin's Wages

The Songs of Our Savior

Preached by: Phill Howell | 04/21/24

Scripture/Text: Psalm 90:1-17; This is the 91st sermon in our series through the book of Psalms, led by Pastor Phill Howell. In this sermon, Phill exposits Psalm 90, discovering that it is not just a prayer but a powerful proclamation of the gospel. This sermon explores Psalm 90's structure, superscription, and sequence within Book IV, and we find that Psalm 90 preaches a message both to God and from God, making it a prayer that resounds with the truth of the gospel. We hope and pray this study of Psalm 90 will reveal to you the gospel of Jesus Christ: though the wages of sin is death, the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus.

Sermon Outline:

    1. The Structure of Psalm 90 Preaches the Gospel

        1. God is our eternal creator. (Psalm 90:1-2)

        2. Human life is fleeting and fragile. (Psalm 90:3-6)

        3. Death is the just and righteous judgment of God because of human sin. (Psalm 90:7-11)

        4. Like Moses prayed, we have no hope unless God is merciful. (Psalm 90:12-17)

    2. The Superscription of Psalm 90 Preaches the Gospel

        1. “A Prayer of Moses, the man of God.”

        2. This is the one and only Psalm written by Moses.

        3. Moses' prayer in verse 13 should remind us of his prayer in Exodus 32:12.

    3. The Sequence of Book IV Preaches the Gospel

        1. The final Psalm of Book IV (Psalm 106) reminds us that God heard Moses' prayer and that Moses served as the intercessor for God's people.

        2. Jesus is our better Moses who intercedes as our mediator.
